Handheld GPS for bicyclist question?
You do not need the Nuvi by garmin as that one is for a car and not a bike...what you do need is this:http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=25600&subcategory_ID=4110 The display is easy to read and it will mount to your stem perfectly and do everything you need and that the Nuvi would do...you do not need a larger screen. you will not be able to securely mount a nuvi to your bike...wont work! The 605 will and it is made for the cyclists every need! Besides you wont believe how easy the 605 is to read in direct sunlight, I use the 705 and you will not be able to see a Nuvi in the same light, It would do you no good. trust me!Most handheld GPSs can be mounted on a bike without too much trouble.
The Edge 205, 305, 605 and 705 are designed for bike use and come with a mount.
What do you need the GPS for? If you want bike-computer functions, all of the Garmin edge series will work. If you want maps, you'll need the newer Edge GPSs (605, 705) -- but they cost a lot more. The Edge 305 and 705 will also give you things like cadence and heart rates, if you want that.
If all you need is turn by turn directions like your car GPS gives, then a hand held GPS can do that for you for less than the bike-specific versions. You can usually buy a bike mount for any given GPS at the same place you got the GPS.
The Nuvi series of GPSs are probably a bit bigger than you want, bike mounts might be hard to find and the batteries only last a few hours. Get a hand-held one instead if you don't go for the Edge series.
The cheapest place to buy Garmin products is probably Amazon. You might find somebody that you've never heard of a little cheaper, but your local bike shop is probably a *lot* more.
I've got an Edge 305 and it's a nice bike computer, but even my several year old handheld Garmin eMap has far more non-bike-specific features.Garmin makes bike mounts for Nuvi's. Here is one at REI that is compatible with several Nuvi models (not all). If your friend just wants a tool to help get around the new area and not bike training features it is probably a good choice. It also looks to be much more economical than a bike specific GPS.
I have used the bike mount for a Garmin 60cs and it worked fine.
