Handheld GPS Devices Reviews

Article by David H. Urmann

Modern handheld GPS devices have made our life more convenient and efficient, providing exact locations and helping us in more ways imaginable.

The GPS has revolutionized the way people live and interacts with people. The system has made us more advance when it comes to tracking our location, store data that we can later use for whatever purpose we see fit and improve other activities that we love to engage in, especially in the world of sports.

One of the many popular uses of handheld GPS devices is tracking location. Gone are the days when you need to always carry a compass with your personal things to make sure that you will not get lost. Most of the time they can get broken and become more unreliable than being useful and men would never ask for directions so they will rather have a goose chase or go "merry go round" to find the right direction that will lead them to where they are heading.

It has also extensively changed outdoor travel, replacing the traditional maps with digital ones and providing precise location, elevation and topographic and other pertinent data. It greatly improves outdoor safety by providing your exact location to your rescuers in case of an emergency. Think for a moment if you get lost in the backcountry of the vast Grand Canyon, every minute counts since temperatures in that region are extreme, hot and cold. With GPS handheld device you can be sure of getting found at the soonest possible time. It's also very convenient to use and carry around since it's portable and handheld.

Handheld GPS devices can be relied for its accuracy. Typically these gadgets are accurate within 10 meters. They take advantage of the many different technologies available to help improve accuracy by eliminating position and signal errors. Performance is another component of GPS devices. You can rely on them to determine exact position from any completely new ones. It is capable of seeking out signals from the nearest orbiting satellites and extract your exact location.

Most GPS devices are lightweight, battery included and will not be hard to lug around anywhere you go. They usually weight around 5 to 9 ounces and the built in memory is less than 1 MB, this goes for the least expensive. Since it has very limited memory this type of handheld GPS has no built-in maps and can only make recordings of your position and some routes. The high end GPS device comes with 16MB of built-in memory, which means they are more powerful and they offer more features than those of their lower priced counterpart.

Batteries are very important considerations with handheld devices and backlighting can easily drain your batteries cutting it by half. If you have to use the backlighting to help you see in dim light, make sure to turn it off as soon as you can to save power. And if you are planning a trip or vacation for more than a day, it is wiser to bring extra batteries and flashlight to avoid unnecessary usage of backlight. Also try to remember that GPS works on a clear sky, and any shadow or obstruction will cut their signals.
