What's the best inexpensive GPS unit I can use for Aviation purposes?
I've been researching handheld aviation GPS units as well. From the research I've done, including asking on aviation websites and talking to pilots, the unanimously consensus is to purchase only Garmin brand units. Currently, I have my preference to either the "Garmin aera 500 Touch Screen GPS" or the "Garmin aera 510 Touch Screen GPS;" the latter is much more expensive ($ 1,099). The 500 is going for $ 699.00 at Sporty's Pilot Shop -- and it has pretty good reviews. If you are trying to save every nickle you can and aren't going to use this unit for IFR flying, then I would suggest browsing either ebay or Craig's list for either a Garmin GPSMAP 196 or 296.
The Aera is a first generation touch screen GPS for garmin. It is very similar to the Nuvi products garmin puts out for automobiles. I'm personally not impressed with them. The touch screens aren't nearly as sensitive as say an iphone or Android phone touch screen.
The 196 and 296 keystrokes are very similar to certified panel mount products like the GNS430W, and I can also tell you that having buttons to push is a lot easier than trying to use a touch screen in turbulence.
One last note is you can get a great deal on a GPSMAP 196 or 296 because they don't have weather receivers which is a desirable(but expensive) option and there has been a few products like the 696 and the Aera released since the 196's and 296's came out.
Hope this helps =)I would suggest Garmin GPSMAP 296 - GPS receiver - aviation, the GPSMAP 296 is a color aviation portable with built-in terrain mapping and alerting, Enhance Situational Awareness, View Images in Sharp Detail, Automate Your Logbook, Navigate by Air, Land or Sea.
